THE VENICE SUMMER PROGRAMME

What is the Purpose of the Summer Intensive Course of Armenian Language and Culture?

By attending the Summer Intensive Course the participants have the opportunity to be brought into close contact with the Armenian language and Armenian culture, with particular attention to its Western variant. The course is based on a 65-hour program with four levels (absolute beginners, intermediate, proficient, advanced/mother tongue). Since 2010 there has also been added the possibility of attend ing lessons in Eastern Armenian, basically in phonology, orthography, and grammar. The lessons in Eastern Armenian are taught to those participants who already have a basic command of the language.

How is the course structured?

At the FIRST LEVEL, the participants are expected to learn the alphabet and a basic vocabulary (around three hundred words) and to be able to sustain an elementary conversation on everyday issues (corresponding to A1, according to the CEFR). The five-hour daily program is based on lessons in the Armenian alphabet (the students are expected to master it by the end of the first week) and grammar, along with intensive practice in listening, speaking, and reading. The main teachers are Prof. Rosine Tachdjian (France) and Prof. Sossi Sousanian (Hungary).

At the SECOND LEVEL, the participants are expected to improve their knowledge of the elementary grammatical structures of Western Armenian, with a particular focus on the ability of understanding frequently used sentences and expressions, communicating information on routine and familiar tasks, as well as reading and writing in a clear and correct manner on simple issues (corresponding to A2). The main teachers are Prof. Bared Manok (France) and Prof. Raffi Setian (U.S.A.).

At the THIRD LEVEL, the participants, whose ability in reading, speaking, and understanding the language is approximately at a n intermediate level, are expected to master the more complex grammatical structures of Western Armenian for producing dialogues and texts on abstract topics (technical issues included) and interacting with native speakers without strain for either party (corresponding to B1-B2). The main teachers are: Prof. Raffi Setian, Prof. Sossi Sousanian, and Prof. Bared Manok. At the third level , the students interested in learning Classical Armenian have the possibility of choosing this option instead of attending the course in Armenian History (taught in English), by studying in the class with students of the fourth level.

At the FOURTH LEVEL (corresponding to C1-C2), the participants, who already possess sufficient master y of the language and its more complex grammatical structures, are expected to gain a good knowledge of Western Armenian Literature and Language, as well as Classical Armenian; and to acquire a general over view on the historical development of the Armenian language from the Classical Armenian of the 5th century to modern Armenian in both its variants. The daily program is based on a one-hour lesson in Western Armenian Literature with Prof. Raffi Setian (U.S.A.), a one-hour lesson in Armenian Traditional and Classical Music with M° Aram Ipekdjian (Italy), a one-hour lesson in Classical Armenian with Prof. Benedetta Contin (Italy), a one-hour lesson in Linguistics and the History of the Armenian Language with Prof. Fr. Boghos Levon Zekiyan, and a one-hour lesson in Armenian Theatre, Cinema, and Performing Arts with Prof. Artsvi Bakhchinyan (Armenia).

A course in Armenian history is included in the daily program for the first three levels. Apart from the lessons of Armenian History, taught in English by Prof. Raffi Setian, ALL OTHER LESSONS ARE CONDUCTED IN ARMENIAN. The lessons in East Armenian are guided by Prof. Artsvi Bakhchinyan.

The daily lessons start at 08:45 a.m. and end at 01:15 p.m. from Monday through Friday. At the end of the daily lessons and at the weekends, the participants are free to organize their own time as they wish or to take part in any cultural activities organized by the Association's Staff.

Extracurricular Activities

Along with the scheduled program of regular lessons, where attendance is compulsory, there is the possibility of participating in some free optional courses in the afternoon: a course in traditional Armenian dance and a course in duduk (for the latter, it is recommended to have one's own musical instrument). The staff of the Summer Intensive Course also organizes round tables and lectures on different topics concerning Armenian culture, literature, and politics, with the participation of experienced lecturers (an exhaustive list of the persons who have contributed over the years to our program is available at this web site). It also organizes cultural tours for discovering the Armenian heritage in Venice, whose presence is witnessed both in the historic centre of the city (the Armenian church of Santa Croce) and in the Lagoon (San Lazzaro, the Monastery of the Mechitarist Fathers), as well as at the most ancient cathedral on the island of Torcello). On Sundays, there is the possibility of participating in the celebration of the Armenian Mass in the Church of the Holy Cross, one of the most ancient Armenian churches in the Diaspora and the oldest in Venice, and on the Feast of the Assumption of our Lady, on the Island of San Lazzaro. During the course, the teaching staff organizes three or four evening parties at the Student Residence for the purpose of creating a pleas ant atmosphere for enjoying and sharing the friendly ambiance created by the participants coming from such a variety of countries, who graciously share their respective cultural and gastronomic differences.
